8/31/2004 01:38:00 PM|||Joe|||I was a little disappointed when Kerry disagreed with Bush's (now taken-back) observation that we can't win the war on terror.
Bush was absolutely correct. We can't win this war, because it's not a real war. Progress can be made, but there is no winning. Everyone knows this.
It was, of course, a mistake for Bush to say that, at least by his administration's mentality. His administration is, on principle, very stubborn. They take a stance and almost never waver. They criticize Kerry precisely because he isn't so stubborn.
So it was a mistake in that sense. But it was a mistake in another sense too.
Bush has emphasized that the war on terror will take a long time. But he always claimed it could be won.
The problem with this war on terror is that there is no obvious finish line. It's very easy to conclude that terror is not the reason, but the excuse for the series of wars (which seem to be very profitable for some American businesses) which we may engage in. This slip makes it even easier to draw this conclusion.|||109398544235884041|||Winning the War on Terror
