10/12/2004 06:26:00 AM|||Joe|||Great. We're doing some bad things.
I haven't paid much attention to the news so far this week. I'm sure there's a lot of the same stale BS excuses.
When do we stop and take a look at ourselves? When do we question our completely insane behavior? People are still making excuses for Abu Ghraib. At what point do people become disillusioned by the fact that we are doing some very bad things? When do we stop saying, “Yeah, but terrorists are even worse!” or “That's war,” as if that justifies or excuses our violations of human rights and international law? If our citizens were treated that way by a foreign government we'd be calling for some serious retribution.
This isn't me being a touchy-feely pacifist. The fact is that what we're doing is no small slip-up — this is a major lapse in morality. Every single good thing we've done is made less significant by the atrocities we're associated with. That resonates with Iraqi citizens, the middle east and the world. We are screwing ourselves.
What kind of a people are we? Do we stand up for what is right? For justice? Do we condemn injustice? Even when that means we rebuke ourselves?
But still our president is stubborn and speaks as little as possible. Let's stay that course. Don't want to change horses. Blah blah blah. Can't be bothered to pronounce Abu Ghraib correctly. Yup.
I have to believe that those responsible will be held accountable.
